Grading scale

The following grading scale is in use at the University of Warsaw:

UW grades are categories and they do not express percentages.
Correspondence between examination percentage results and numerical grades is established by examiner.
Frequently, 60% is assumed as the minimum passing percentage.

Note: 5+ grade does not exist on UW scale.

 

 

 

Requirements of the receiving units

 

Rules of study – short-term students

  • The academic year is divided into two semesters (winter and summer), each followed by an examination period. Detailed information about the organization of the academic year can is available in the academic calendar.
  • Short-term students are assigned to one receiving unit and should choose courses primarily from this unit’s offer. They are also entitled to attend courses from two other units and the additional study offer. Detailed information is available here.
  • It is possible to take courses for maximum 30 ECTS per semester.
  • Attendance is obligatory at most of the courses.

Coronavirus: current rules and restrictions

On 28 January the Minister of Health decided to prolong applied restrictions till 14 February.

The current list of restrictions:

  • covering your mouth and nose in all public places (also on the street),
    • It does not apply in parks, botanical and historic gardens, allotment gardens, in the woods/forest, on the beach and when travelling by a private car.
  • on public transport vehicles 50% of the seats must be vacant.
  • restaurants, bars, clubs etc. remain closed (meals only to take away or delivery) – including restaurants and food zones in the shopping malls.
  • shops are open in compliance with the sanitary regime (1 person/10 m2 in shops up to 100 m2 and 1 person/15 m2 in shops above 100 m2).
  • Hours for seniors (from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:00) do NOT apply anymore!
  • Meetings – only up to 5 persons. Weddings, communions and parties are forbidden.
  • Hotels will not be available for tourists.
  • Ski slopes will be closed. Sports infrastructure will be available only for professional athletes.
  • Gyms, swimming pools, fitness clubs and aquaparks remain closed.
  • Max 1 person/15 m2 in religious worship places.
  • Cinemas and theatres remain closed.
  • Museums and art galleries are open in compliance with the sanitary regime.

Please remember, that people coming to Poland by collective organised transport are obliged to undergo 10-day quarantine. 

The obligation does not apply if:

  • you have been vaccinated,
  • you have a negative covid-19 test result (PCR or antigen) – it is valid for 48 hours from the time the result is issued,
    • The results must be in Polish or English.
  • you are a student at a Polish university*.

All the above restrictions are valid until 14 February. Next update is expected in less than two weeks.

 

* Students, starting their mobility in the 2nd semester, acquire „student status” from 17 February in accordance with the Academic Calendar.

Registration Rules

  1. Register for the courses
    Check how to register for courses at your receiving unit at the University of Warsaw: on-line or through the mobility coordinator. Remember that you have to be registered in USOSweb for all the courses you attend.
  2. Registration deadline
    Check the registration deadline for the courses you want to attend. At most of the units it is possible to register for courses only within the first few weeks of the semester. Remember that other students may wish to join the same class, so do not wait till the end of the registration period, as places may already be taken.
  3. No places available on the course
    If the course you want to attend is full (there are no places available), please contact the Mobility Coordinator at the unit offering the course(s) in question.
  4. Unregistering from a course
    Once the registration period is closed, you will not be able to unregister from a course. It will stay on your account in USOSweb even if you do not attend it. At the end you will get a statutory fail grade for this class.
    Please remember that deleting a course in your Learning Agreement does not mean that you will be automatically unregistered form the course in USOSweb!
  5. Resign from passing a course – optional
    Every UW student is allowed to give up passing ONE course during his/her studies at UW. This can be done in USOSweb, under the STUDENT’S SECTION > Linkage> Resign.The option is available within the deadline set in the academic calendar. You will not obtain any grade from the course and it will not be included in the Transcript of Records.
  6. Courses should not overlap
    Classes are conducted live and attendance is obligatory at most of the courses – only two absences per semester are allowed. It will not be possible to participate in two or more courses held at the same time. Make sure you no courses are overlapping in your timetable.

The maximum number of ECTS points per semester is 30.
In justified cases it is possible to apply for additional ECTS points. If you need to exceed the 33 ECTS limit, please contact the IRO.

If you have any problems with course registration or need advice regarding course selection – please contact the Mobility Coordinator at the unit offering the course(s) in question.

Confirmation of Stay

Visit the IRO at the end of your stay to get the Confirmation of Stay – a document confirming the dates of your studies at the University of Warsaw.

Some institutions have their own forms to be filled out by the IRO.

If you received such a form, please make sure to bring it printed to the IRO. Otherwise, we will provide you with a document generated from our system.

Please remember that we can confirm your stay only until the day you come to visit us at the IRO!

Anonymous questionnaire about your stay at the University of Warsaw

Shortly before the end of the semester you will receive a link to an anonymous questionnaire about your stay at the University of Warsaw.

Clearance Slip

During your visit to the IRO we will activate your Clearance Slip.
You will find it in the Common Section of the USOSweb.

Transcript of Records

Transcript of Records will be issued when you have all your grades in USOSweb. Please monitor your grades in USOSweb and inform your contact person at the IRO once the grades appear.

Before you get obtain the Transcript of records, you need to complete the previous steps: the Confirmation of stay, the Anonymous questionnaire and the Clearance Slip.

You don’t have to be in Warsaw to receive the document. We will provide you with a scan of your Transcript of Records as soon as it is ready.

Confirmation of Arrival

Some Universities require the confirmation of arrival. The document to be filled out by the IRO is always provided by your home institution. It will be signed at the beginning of your studies at the University of Warsaw. If you are not sure whether your institution requires such a document, please contact the IRO/Erasmus Office at your home University.

Learning Agreement
When your online application is accepted you should prepare your Learning Agreement “Before the mobility” (part 1). Once the document is signed by you and the coordinator at your institution, send it to your Mobility Coordinator. Please keep in mind that the document can be signed  only after you are admitted to UW.
Course Registration

Remember that you need to be registered for all the courses you are attending. Some units allow Erasmus & Exchange students to register by themselves, whereas at others you need to contact the Mobility Coordinator.

Important: Learning Agreement is not registration. If you want to add/delete a course, make sure to do the changes in your registration as well!

Electronic Student Card validity and extenstion

Every University of Warsaw student can apply for an Electronic Student Card (ELS). Check how you can benefit from having the card and how to apply here.

Validity and extension

Electronic Student Card is valid from the start of the semester. If you study at the University of Warsaw for two semesters, you will have to extend the validity of your ELS. At the beginning of the second semester, you will receive detailed information about the procedure.

Extension of Stay

Students coming for the first semester have the possibility of applying for an extension of stay for the second semester. In order to do so, they have to submit the Extension Form signed by the Mobility Coordinator of your receiving unit at UW and the coordinator at your home University.
The application deadline is November 30th.

Nomination

To study as an Erasmus/Exchange student, the University of Warsaw has to receive nomination from your home institution. Please contact your International Relations Office about the possibility to apply for an exchange at UW.

Once we receive the nomination, we will contact you about the details of your exchange.

Application

Each student has to submit an online application.

  • Winter semester – by 15 May
  • Summer semester – by 15 November

Acceptance

Once your application is processed and accepted, the Confirmation of Acceptance will be uploaded to your application at the IRK website within 10 working days.

Learning Agreement

Health Insurance

Each student is required to have a health insurance valid for the whole duration of his/her stay at the University of Warsaw. You will be asked to show a proof of your insurance upon arrival. It is recommended to have a confirmation of the insurance in English or Polish.
European Health Insurance Card is accepted.

VISA

All non-EU/EEA citizens should contact the Polish Consulate or Embassy in their country of residence. Detailed information about the visa procedure is available on the website of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

MENTOR

Incoming students can apply a Mentor – a local student who meet you at the airport and help you during your first days in Warsaw. You will receive a link to the application before the semester starts. The Mentor programme is run by the Erasmus Student Network of the University of Warsaw.

Update on the current situation at the University of Warsaw, 04.05.2020

Functioning of the University of Warsaw after May 24th, 2020

  • Based on the decision of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, University premises are closed until May 24th.
  • If the Ministry does not extend the period beyond May 24th, UW authorities plan the following:
    • To continue teaching on-line until the end of the semester.
    • To re-start classes, that require physical presence on campus (ex. laboratories) and which are currently not being taught. (The timetable will be published after May 15th)
  • Later this week an updated version of the 2019/2020 academic calendar will be published.

National authorities have announced the second stage of lifting Coronavirus restrictions.

As of May 4th the following facilities are open:

  • Shopping malls
    • Social distancing regulations still apply. A distance of 2 meters should be kept from other individuals at all times. Face and nose are to be covered.
    • The number of persons in the shopping facility is limited to 1 person per 15 m2.
    • Food courts, sport facilities and recreational areas within the shopping malls remain closed.
  • Construction, home improvement, DIY shops
    • Social distancing regulations still apply. A distance of 2 meters should be kept from other individuals at all times. Face and nose are to be covered.
  • Hotels and other short-term stay facilities.
    • All recreational areas, swimming pools, SPAs and restaurants within hotel premises are to remain closed.

Later this week, Veturilo bikes should be available for usage.

Funkcjonowanie Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego po 24 maja

Do 24 maja, na podstawie rozporządzenia Ministra Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego, obowiązuje ograniczenie działalności uczelni. Do tego czasu wykłady i zajęcia na UW prowadzone są jedynie w formie zdalnej.

Jeżeli MNiSW nie przedłuży obowiązywania ograniczeń, to po 24 maja – wg wstępnych założeń, które doprecyzowane zostaną w zarządzeniu rektora – UW planuje:

· kontynuować do końca semestru w niezmienionej formie wykłady i zajęcia prowadzone zdalnie,

· uruchomić – przy zachowaniu wszelkich wytycznych sanitarnych – stacjonarne zajęcia praktyczne, wymagające obecności na terenie uczelni, które obecnie nie są realizowane (harmonogramy zajęć zostaną przedstawione po 15 maja).

W przyszłym tygodniu ukaże się nowe zarządzenie rektora UW dotyczące zmiany kalendarza akademickiego 2019/2020, realizacji zajęć dydaktycznych na UW oraz organizacji sesji.

Władze państwowe ogłosiły drugi etap znoszenia ograniczeń związanych z koronawirusem.

Od 4 maja otwarte są następujące obiekty:

  • centra handlowe
    • nadal obowiązują przepisy dotyczące dystansowania społecznego. Należy zachować odległość 2 metrów od innych osób. Twarz i nos powinny być zakryte.
    • ilość osób w obiekcie handlowym jest ograniczona do 1 osoby na 15 m2.
    • punkty gastronomiczne, obiekty sportowe i strefy rekreacyjne w centrach handlowych pozostają zamknięte.
    • sklepy budowlane, ogrodnicze, dla majsterkowiczów
    • nadal obowiązują przepisy dotyczące dystansowania społecznego. Należy zachować odległość 2 metrów od innych osób. Twarz i nos powinny być zakryte.
    • hotele i inne obiekty pobytu krótkoterminowego
    • wszystkie strefy rekreacyjne, baseny, spa i restauracje na terenie hotelu pozostają zamknięte.

Jeszcze w tym tygodniu powinny być dostępne do użytku rowery miejskie Veturilo.

October Orientation Week
09 października 2020

Welcoming of Erasmus+ and other exchange programmes’ students in the 1st semester of the academic year 2020/21 was held in a slightly different format than usual. Considering the restrictions resulting from the current epidemiological situation, most of the meetings took place online through tools such as Google Meet and Zoom.

 The 2-week Intensive Online Polish Course, organised by the Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners “Polonicum” of the UW Faculty of Polish Studies, started on 14th September.

 The following events took place between 1st and 15th October:

  • IRO Information Meeting
  • „Students welcome Students” Meeting organised together with ESN UW and UW Students’ Union
  • Course registration training
  • Introduction to Polish at Polonicum, concerning the offer of Polish language and culture courses for foreigners
  • Library Instruction workshops with the University Library Instructor
  • Meeting with PhD candidates of the UW Faculty of Law and Administration, concerning the issues related to renting a flat
  • Information Meetings with Mobility Coordinators at several UW Faculties
  • Cultural Orientation Workshop and Polish Culture and Intercultural Communication Workshop organised by UW Welcome Point 

Bearing in mind the need to establish real relationships between students, walking tours with guides in small groups were also organised:

  • Campus Tours around the UW Main Campus
  • Warsaw Tours on the Royal Route and in the Old Town

In order to guarantee safety, it was necessary to register for a specific group, and the tours were carried out taking into consideration all health and safety measures imposed by Polish authorities.
