Communicating across cultures together with the enhancement of cultural competencies (cross-cultural knowledge, cultural self-awareness) and knowledge about different culture are essential tools for the success of cross-cultural, multinational cooperation.

Part one – Introduction to communicating across cultures (approx. 40 minutes)

  • Ice breaker: Facts and myths about selected countries
  • What is culture? Culture and identity
  • Why cultures differ so much?
  • What is Intercultural Competence?
  • Sensibility to detect and manage culture related factors

 

Part two – Cross-cultural communication? (approx. 110 minutes)

  • How to categorize cultures to make our life easier ?
  • Communication patterns – high vs low context cultures, indirect vs direct, formal vs informal communication
  • Non-verbal communication – especially space, facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice
  • Identifying cultural competencies needed to deal with challenges in cross-cultural communication
  • Case studies – are key in this section

 

Part three – Summary. (approx. 30 minutes)

  • Cultural relativity – how it influence perception of cultural differences
  • Practical tips
  • Top cross-cultural researchers
